Stay home and be blessed & healed starting by reading my free EBook; Church what it is and is not. You will find that you may be spot on. There is a good chance that you are in God’s perfect will and on the perfect bulls-eye!

INTRODUCTION TO: CHURCH WHAT IT IS AND IS NOT

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR

EVERY week thousands of members of the body of Christ are sitting at home, confused, hurt, isolated & unassembled.  These people know that they love Jesus, but have had a hard time understanding what has been called the “Church.”  Most of these folks have walked with Jesus for many years, and have desperately tried to fit in by doing everything that was expected of them.  They have served many departments, given of their time & resources, & sat through endless hours of meetings trying to help the Leader in his many decisions.  But something was wrong, something was lacking, something was out-of-order and there seemed to be no solution, so they just quietly slipped home & never returned.  Perhaps this describes you or someone you know.

For those who have looked at “the Church” and have made a decision not to participate because of all of the abuse, scandals and confusion, “I ask that you would forgive us.”  Truly we have not been a good example of who Jesus the Son of the Living God really is.  But after today, after reading the truth in these pages, you will no longer have an excuse for not following Jesus.  No matter what man has done to you or what you have seen man do to others.  Please read on.

My purpose is to give hope to you valuable people at home; you may be closer to the perfect will of God than you know!   Even in the sorry condition of the seven churches of Asia, Jesus still referred to them as golden.

“…and the seven (golden) lamp stands… are the seven churches:”  ~ Revelation 1:20

Hear these words, Jesus gave his very life for the church and He still considers us valuable containers of His presence!  He still calls us friend and His Bride-to-be!  However, if a sailing ship was traveling from Cordova Alaska to San Francisco, California, and its navigation was one degree off with no course correction, eventually it would wind up in Chile, South America.  Do you see the point?  Just one degree off over 4000 miles!

Jesus only mentioned the word church twice in all of his teachings; do you suppose what we have today is what He intended?  Or could it be that 2000 years ago, the church got one degree off course and has not only not hit the bull’s-eye, but has missed the target all together?  Do we dare ask this question?  I did and my findings are frightfully FREEING!

This book is by no means a complete exhaustive theological study on the subject of ‘The Church’, but I do believe by understanding the history, the process and some “real life” experiences, it might help you see a bigger picture.  For those of you that have left the church building and haven’t returned, this might answer some of your questions, remove any shame that “well meaning” people have put on you and possibly show you how close to the perfect will of God you might be.

I too have been wounded by what has been called the “Church,” and some of my writings reflect those scars.  My intent is not to throw stones, but to reveal my process.  This book is written in the order that the information was discovered, much like a journal.  You may understand the revelations better if you read it from beginning to end.  I pray that you find the information and process as life changing as I did.

Please read the whole book, it is free and healing.

Separation of Church & Ministry

Thomas Spencer – TheBibleGuy.com

INTRODUCTION

A doctor in the operating room asks his assistant to do a certain procedure but the assistant replied: “I don’t know how to do that.” Then the frustrated doctor yelled: “Go back to school and learn the things you don’t know.” The assistant said to himself: “How can I learn the things I don’t know, if I don’t know what they are?”

It takes an amazing Man of God to admit he does not know everything and that we as a body need each other to press us all to a higher level. My prayer is that you and I, in this process, may press each other to a higher level in Christ.

Thomas Spencer – TheBibleGuy.com

This is a “workbook style” handbook for those who are transitioning from an institutional form of man-made religion to Jesus’s original new wine skin, which brings freedom to both The True Church and the many ministries that The True Church is involved in! If this is helpful to you please put this book in the hands of the leadership team before you have you Vision meeting, it will set some leaders free in advance and expedite your meeting.

Warning: if you are satisfied with what you think the Church is then do not read this because it will challenge you to search for Truth and will demand you take action! The True Word of God will wonderfully mess with our old traditions, “sacred cows” and everything else built on the foundation of hay, wood and straw.

“Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.” 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 (NKJV)

It has taken me over 40 years to climb up the mountain so I could get a better view of The True Church that Jesus said He would build. In my journey I discovered: what the Church is not, what the Church is, where the Church has drifted and why.

I have also defined several well thought out schemes Satan has used to deceive, silence and ultimately paralyze The True Church. Understanding the difference between Church & Ministry will answer many questions of why we have so many “churches” and though they may have an image of godliness, they are actually powerless and most have played right into Satan’s scheme. “having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” 2 Timothy 3:5

In my book Church what it is and is not I go to great lengths to document my real life journey of discovery, which details The True Church. In this article today, I am doing the laundry and separating two words that are not interchangeable. Two words that modern society has muddied to the point of confused Christians falling away from our Lord Jesus altogether.

Separation of Church & Ministry

Thomas Spencer – TheBibleGuy.com

Chapter 1–WHAT THE TRUE CHURCH REALLY IS!

Through the Bible.sm

DEFINE THE TRUE CHURCH (The called-out ones) The following are my working scriptures in (NKJV) unless otherwise specified. From my Book Church What it is…

Colossians 1:13 “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.”

Matthew 16:18 “…I (Jesus) will build My church…”

Matthew 18:20 “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Ephesians 3:10 “…now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places,”

After Bible College in 1982 I prayed this prayer: “Lord Jesus help me to flush the toilet on everything I learned here and as I personally go through Your Word again may only the things that are Truth remain.” I am asking you to do the same. We have to start asking some foundational questions like: in the above scriptures where do we get the idea that the Church is a building or non-profit organization where we have to be concerned about pews, hymnals and TV cameras?

Here is a simple working process to a definition:

The True Church is not A something, it is WHEN something. The True Church is WHEN two or more followers of Jesus connect. The smallest, purest form of Jesus’ Church is an individual family starting with the husband & wife:

Ephesians 5:22-33 “Wives…husbands…This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” The True Church could grow larger in number with a granddad, grandmother, children or grandchildren! But The True Church is not limited by size; it could be five families gathering together or an entire city gathering together. So to call a building a church is not just “mincing” words or semantics, it is the foundational building block of deception, which Satan has used; through false religion to paralyze The True Church.

The True Church is not limited by; time, days or special places. The True Church is WHEN or whenever, wherever, at any time or all the time!

The True Church does not even need money to exist or function! Oops, was that a bombshell? I have walked in this revelation for over 25 years and sometimes words just pop out without the process of my revelation. So here was my foundational question to our Lord Jesus; “What is the absolute minimum The True Church needs to BE The True Church?

Answer: one born again person is only a Christian, it takes a minimum of two True Followers of Jesus that connect or come together to cause the wonderful miracle of the presence of our Lord Jesus, the very Son of God to manifest. That is it, that is The True Church! That is the FREEDOM & POWER that terrifies Satan himself! That is “…the manifold wisdom of God … made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places,” Ephesians 3:10.

Think about it; two Jesus following women bump into each other in the produce section of the grocery store and one sister says: “A colleague at my work has been attacked with cancer would you pray?” The two may shake hands, like a typical greeting In a public market (not attracting any unnecessary attention) pray a simple prayer of agreement and at that very moment, the presence of our Lord Jesus will manifest, God is glorified, cancer is healed and Satan is once again defeated!

Therefore: here is my shocking list of what The True Church does not need: money, tithe, buildings, hymnals, a once a week religious “service,” toilet paper, bank account, governmental non-profit status, sound system, praise & worship leader or team, youth pastor; for that matter it does not need: Apostles, Prophets, Pastors, Evangelist or Teachers to function on a daily basis at all.

*Disclaimer: Ephesians 4:11 which are authority gifts chosen and given to The True Church by Jesus Himself are exactly that – Gifts to the Church, gifts to equip The True Church to do the work of the ministry. Here is the challenge: this new wine; the miracle power of The Holy Spirit working in us, which is bubbly, powerful, a little vinegary, explosive has got to function and operate within a NEW Wineskin that is not dry but rather flexible and able to handle seemly random acts of the miraculous at any moment.

Here is what The True Church is all about:

Worship-prayer, fellowship, singing, did I say prayer, reading of God’s Word, the Lord’s Supper which is a full-group-meal (not a cracker & a little cup of juice) remembering Jesus until He calls us home.

Evangelism-sharing what Jesus has done for you, to a world that has no hope, water baptism (usually a dad baptising his children or new believers in the Kingdom).

Discipleship-through relationship, we will be teaching & training others to follow Jesus.

Leadership– “And He (Jesus) Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,” Ephesians 4:11-12. Even though you will be connected to these gifts… God’s Household or Church is “…built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” Ephesians 2:20 …every meeting will not have these gifts present.

“I (Paul) myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with knowledge and competent to instruct one another.” Romans 15:14

Man, I get excited as I even think of this freedom!

Separation of Church & Ministry

Thomas Spencer – TheBibleGuy.com

Chapter 2 –WHAT IS THE MINISTRY, WHAT IS YOUR MINISTRY?

DEFINE MINISTRIES – organized events, gifting’s or “movements” that Christians do.

Acts 6:4 “and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

Romans 11:13 “…I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I take pride in my ministry”

2 Corinthians 5:18 “…and gave us the ministry of reconciliation”

Colossians 4:17 “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord.”

2 Timothy 4:5 “…do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.”

2 Corinthians 3:6 “He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”

Colossians 1:7 “…Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,”

Colossians 4: “…Tychicus will tell you all the news about me. He is a dear brother, a faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord.

COMPARISONS

Let me try to break it down through comparison and bring it home.
-The True Church cannot be counted, or measured.
-The True Church is anywhere, anytime, everywhere all-the-time; a continual spontaneous connecting or assembling together that cannot be tracked by man or radar.
-The True Church membership is like a baby being born into the family and one cannot leave the church and join another because there is only one Church.
-The True Church is organic, it moves around by the wind of The Holy Spirit, it is the Body of Christ on earth; it is soon to be the Bride of Christ.
-The True Church does not need a name (it has been my experience that when we try to put a name on “a church” it has just lost its identity and power). Trying to name “a church” puts us into a separation category like a denomination; like denominations of money (separating our money) denominations & names separate the body of Christ instead of joining the body.

A ministry or your ministry is just the opposite. A ministry can be measured and counted. We can determine if it is growing or declining. We can join a ministry or graduate from a ministry or just leave a ministry. We can pledge certain amounts of support to a ministry like money, supplies, volunteered time etc. Ministries will have a beginning, middle and an end. Ministries need to have a clear purpose, a mission statement and a vision: Habakkuk 2:2 (NKJV) “…Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it.”

A teaching ministry may on one hand have certain topics in the Word that our Lord has revealed and you can count how many people have completed those topics or to another extreme, start a college and count how many have graduated, what the real costs were and evaluate if this ministry should continue.

A giving ministry may on one hand collect finances and supply Bibles to those that do not have them or on the other hand, purchase and run a printing company that prints Bibles and Christian literature.

A ministry of helps may give a once a year; free back to school haircuts or open up a once a week free medical clinic.

A music ministry may sing & play guitars for free in the market place or run a recording studio.

A youth ministry (be careful here on handing out titles; there is no such office of “youth pastor” in The Word of God, you are either a Pastor Eph 4:11 or you are not) may open a facility geared to youth as an outreach for evangelism, this is a youth ministry. Is this ringing true to you yet?

All ministries will have physical needs; how you go about meeting those needs can be as creative as the ministry itself. If we sense we are called to a certain ministry, write the vision down, share with those believers around you and see if it will be a collective ministry or one that you do on your own.

Again, if you are ok with your status quo concerning the; condition, power and influence of your ministry and Jesus’s Church then continue by faith and hand this article to someone who may need it. If you see merit in what you have read so far or if these words bear witness to your spirit; the following will be some practical, encouraging recommendations.

Separation of Church & Ministry

Thomas Spencer – TheBibleGuy.com

Chapter 3 –PREPPING FOR THE TRANSITON

TYPICAL TRANSITON: In this transition we are usually looking at a typical American building on property called the church that has a governmental non-profit status with a person called pastor, a set of legal bylaws and a board of directors legally responsible for the assets plus some kind of membership which legally guarantees any loans or mortgage debt based on the amount of income or tithes & offerings the membership offers. Wow, no wonder The True Church is bogged down.

In this transition the leader must understand the importance of the separation and be convinced by The Word, The Holy Spirit and the leadership of Jesus Himself that this is the only way to set The True Church free; help the ministry to thrive and put Satan under foot.

*NOTE: If you have a relationship with an Apostolic Gift this would be a great time for some support and possibly his presence to expedite the following steps. If you do not have a relationship with an Apostolic Gift and would like one, please contact me I would be honored to walk you through this exciting process.

POSSIBLE SCENARIO

Location: a town of 20,000 people in a county of 40,000 people. A ministry called a church was established many years ago with the current revelation that was available at that time. Men, called pastors, were hired to “do the ministry” plus raise funds to pay their own salary, and the overhead of the building etc.

After one pastor retired or left or was fired another man was hired. This man had a True Teaching Ministry and the people loved him and he loved the people but he only had influence in their lives for one hour on Sunday and one hour on Wednesday. The leader was frustrated and saw little growth, actually finances went down and he had to work outside the ministry to pay the bills.

The ministry group spent three years “getting their house in order before they go to war” Deuteronomy 20:5-9. Successfully cleansing their lives they are ready for marching orders but having trouble defining the true battle and now asking our Lord Jesus for direction. Could it be possible that God would send an Apostle to share some good news, where the real battle is and give a picture of what it could look like?

POSSIBLE PICTURE (from book: Church what it is: Prototypes)
(This story is not a factual event or a reality show but rather several real testimonies all hooked together in one story to give you a NEW picture).

  1. EVANGELISM: Real Word of the Lord for the End Time Church 2014-2015 “Everyone win one!”

THE STORY – John, a 25 year old man; husband and father of a 4 year old girl accepted Christ as his Saviour and declared Jesus Lord.

  1. DISCIPLESHIP: Mark who witnessed to John at work and prayed with him to receive Christ gave him a little booklet “Welcome to Your New Life” explaining and reinforcing what happened to John. Mark also asked to meet with John on Monday morning at 8 AM for one hour before work to encourage John in his new life with Jesus. They met; Mark said a little prayer, they had a cup of coffee, Mark read an encouraging scripture verse and asked John if they could meet for the next 5 Mondays and go through a workbook together? John agreed, took the book “Beginning the Journey” and discipleship was started.

Three Mondays had passed and Mark invited John & his family to his home for a cook out. They showed up and Sally, Mark’s wife had an opportunity to ask Teresa, John’s wife if she had seen a change in John lately and a relationship was started between the two wives.

  1. CHURCH: Week 5 Mark & John finished the discipleship workbook and Mark who had already explained that they had a few couples come over every Thursday night for fellowship, study and prayer, invited John & his family over at 6 PM for a little dinner to celebrate John’s completion of the workbook. They had prayer, dinner and a small gift for John’s graduation. Then Mark asked John to share his experience and tell his story. John shared his salvation experience and what he had learned in the last 5 weeks right in front of his wife!Sally asked Teresa if she would help in the kitchen and asked if Teresa would like to experience what her husband John had. Teresa prayed with Sally and accepted the Lord and through relationship Sally started discipling Teresa. (Have you noticed they have not been to a building yet?)
  2. CITY CELEBRATION: Mark continued meeting with John before work to go through the second workbook “The Arrival Kit”, Sally and Teresa were meeting weekly plus John and Sally continued meeting at Mark’s gathering on Thursday nights and this Sunday all of them went to a facility called The Neighbourhood Life Center for a City Wide Celebration. And a celebration it was!

Let’s see what it looked like from Teresa’s perspective.

  1. MINISTRY CENTER: Everyone seemed happy, lively music was playing, refreshments were served in the lobby and then an announcement to start the meeting. A few hundred people; old, young, some babies all gathered in the auditorium and a man comes forward to greet the assembly. He began to pray and a warm feeling came over me, like a love I have never felt before. Then he explained that this was a City Wide Celebration and asked for all of the city leaders, those who have their homes open every week; like Mark and Sally, to please stand. There were about 20 couples, and 10 single men & women and around 12 to 15 youth. The leader then led us all in a prayer over them.

Next he asked if anyone had accepted Jesus as Lord in the last couple of months to please stand. Mark and Sally encouraged John and I to stand so we did. The leader explained that The True Church; The Family of God which we are a part of, had been praying for us over the last several months and that today’s gathering was to celebrate us, to praise Jesus for our salvation. The leader pulled back a curtain revealing a large banner with a lot of names written on it. He invited us to come forward and circle our names. Mark and Sally walked us forward as music began, people clapping, dancing, singing.

We found our names, circled them, went back to our seats. The words of the songs that everyone was singing were projected up on the wall; I could not help but begin twirling with daughter in my arms and I found myself singing along, I have not sung since high school choir!

After several songs the children were invited to come forward for a little story. Then they were asked if they would like to continue the story in the children’s area downstairs. After the children skipped out of the auditorium to a lively song, we all sat down and heard wonderful reports from the first leaders that had their homes open every week. Reports of miracles; people being physically healed, marriages restored, people accepting Christ just like John and I.

  1. MINISTRIES: Then the leader shared reports of everything that had been taking place in the center for the last month. Study classes on books of the Bible, prophecy, Old & New Testament survey, Marriage Enrichment classes and a class for new people like us just to explain everything that is offered here. The ushers handed us a brochure on the different services: food & clothing bank, a once a week free medical clinic, a youth & children’s facility, Saturday night Christian bands the list went on and on. The cycle continues!

Chapter 4 –THE CALENDAR & POSSIBLE SCHEDULE!

The delicate balance of Church and Ministry come from my book Church what it is in Chapter 13.

PRIORITIES OF THIS MINISTRY

  • One-on-one discipleship: …if two agree… ~ Matthew 18:19
  • House-to-house: …where two or three come together… ~ Matthew 18:20
  • Discipleship-Training-School: Matthew 10:1-11:1 Special assignments to small groups. ~ Luke 9:1-6
  • Saturday-Schools: Special assignments to large groups. ~ Luke 10:1-12
  • Celebrations: …all together in one place… ~ Acts 2:1
  • Networking: …Jesus feeds the 5,000… ~ Matthew 14:21

CALENDAR OF THE TRUE CHURCH

1st Priority: Whatever it takes to get each family in order: spiritually, financially, relationships and the very function of their houses.

2nd Priority: Meet at least once a week as The True Church, you family or a couple of families come together, have a meal, remember our Lord’s death & resurrection until He calls us home. Share life victories & challenges in the living room, pray & read a scripture as Jesus leads the meeting. Close by praying for those we may touch the rest of the week.

3rd Priority: Purpose days & times to be involved in your community, work, school, neighbourhood to witness, pray for the lost and bring them to Christ. If your neighbour asks if you would like to join in on a community wide garage sale ON SUNDAY your schedule should be free enough to always say: “Yes, of course, thanks for asking me!” If on the other hand you were to say no I have to go to church that day, your witness just became powerless!

4th Priority: Disciple that new born again person on a weekly basis. Pray for him every day, call him several times a week with an encouraging word, meet with him once a week to go over his discipleship homework, assimilate him into your once a week group meeting and then if the ministry center has any resources he could use, then introduce him! But let NOTHING in the ministry center distract you from Being The True Church.

CALENDAR FOR THE CENTER:

(Remember The True Church can function without anything listed in this following section! Therefore the activities of The True Church need to have the greatest priority and not be in competition with the ministry. At best ministry events should be to support, train & equip The True Church to do the “work of the ministry in their homes. The True Church is not a “program” of the ministry; it is the bulls-eye. FYI: people from other fellowships or other towns may attend & support the following ministries and the local folks should never be demanded to support or forced to “show up at any of these events).

Sunday AM

9-10 Speciality Classes & prayer appointments

9-10:30 Open Lobby bookstore & refreshments, band warm up

10:30 Start Celebration (not a service) Celebrate Jesus, Celebrate!

11 Children’s “Theme of the month story” dismiss to specialized ministry groups

11:15 – Noon A general message of the Lord

Noon (possible once a month – All Cities Celebration with all groups in the surrounding towns pot-luck stay all day)

Sunday PM

5-6 Speciality Classes & prayer appointments

5-6:30 Open Lobby, bookstore & refreshments, band warm up

6:30 Anything! A specific study series. A specific on going prayer & prophetic session for the city. All night singing & praise. A guest speaker. Wow what freedom.

Monday – Friday Schedule in the Ministry Center depends on vision, manpower & resources. (Just remember all of this has nothing to do with The True Church, these are just ministries that The True Church is involved in to share the Love of God. Therefore there could be speciality classes every night, a once a week free medical clinic one day a week, or clothing bank, food bank, a team trained to have free prayer for walk-ins or appointments, a bookstore, Daycare, or any other business of integrity that would add to the ministry.

Saturday Schedule in the Ministry this could be your most productive day of all. Seminars, all day or Saturday school, gathering place for a citywide food-drive, or Saturday night band for evangelizing youth.

Chapter 5 –TIME TO SEPARTE!

PREPPING THE LEADER TO SEPARATE THE MINISTRY FROM THE CHURCH:

  1. If you are ready to take this step it is probably not “new news” to your leadership team. Our Lord Jesus has already prepared you and your team that a change is in the wind. Some may be opposed and that is ok, most people are fearful of the unknown, love them through the process. Some may leave.
  2. Most of the people in your influence already love you or they would not have stayed and supported you through this frustrating & cleansing time, now they are READY to hear the vision! They are ready to march; they are ready to go to war at your command because they believe you are their Godly leader!Do not hide anything from them! Tell them that you are going into several strategy meetings with their leadership team to agree on the perfect will of God. Every meeting you have from now to your strategy meeting have them lay hands on you & pray over you and your team publicly. Powerfully encourage them to pray for you every day, this is a BIG DEAL, “and when the time comes to announce the vision you will be one, in agreement and power will be released.” (That was a Word from our Lord).
  3. The Leader: most of this meeting, inventory, evaluation & vision setting will ultimately land on your shoulders. So the more information you gather in advance will help move your meeting along more smoothly. I would recommend going through the process on your own and in the area of evaluating your ministry it will help you clarify the bulls-eye of what God has called you to.Next it will help you clarify what other ministries stem out of your anointing and what ministries are simply needed to support your ministry. Example if your ministry is teaching adults then you may have to have some kind of childcare to give the parents undisturbed time to learn, therefore the children’s ministry would stem from your ministry out of necessity. Thirdly you will know 80% of everything needed to be done before your meeting because God is talking to you (sell your building & rent if you need to, bring another ministry into your building at different hours to help with expenses, take a sabbatical to write the book our Lord has laid on your heart etc.).What you will want to watch for in the meeting is the call of God on everyone else in the meeting. What other True callings are in the room, who is really supportive of your ministry, what insight and revelation will God give to someone else in the room? And watch for this one: when the Holy Spirit moves on someone with a gift of faith, this is where the meeting goes beyond your preparedness and control, to Jesus actually leading the meeting Himself. It will sound something like this: “I don’t see any reason why we can’t just…” Wow, stand back and watch your Lord move!
  4. Needed for your leadership meeting: A printed outline & schedule printed & handed out in advance. People chosen by the main leader; possibly an Apostle to help navigate, a person to take notes, board of directors, any true Elders & Deacons & possibly ministry department heads. Supplies – white or chalk board, note books & pens for each person, a city or county map on a cardboard back that will hold push pins, push pins in map to mark every family household. Records of: finances budget, debt & assists, even a property appraisal if you have one. Maybe some refreshment: bottle water, coffee & veggie/fruit tray. No carbs, you will be fighting against “a spirit of drowsiness” as it is. Lunch perhaps sack lunches or meat & salad trays.

Separation of Church & Ministry

Thomas Spencer – TheBibleGuy.com

Chapter 6 – THE ACTUAL LEADERSHIP MEETING! Separate The True Church from the Ministry.

SESSION #1 – READ OUTLINE & CHAPTERS 1-4 OUT LOUD, THEN TAKE INVENTORY

  1. Inventory your ministry. Is your ministry a ministry of one? For example: praying every day for the students at your child’s school may just be you alone. Is your ministry a group ministry opened to others and several begin to pray prayers of agreement? To SEPARATE the functions of Church from the duties of the Ministry or Ministries and set The True Church of Jesus FREE we must inventory.
  2. Inventory your physical assets. All assets will go into the Ministry category. If you own a bus that the church people use to take youth to camp it is a ministry of transportation for everything including camp. (as vision takes off someone may be called to use the bus to transport folks to their doctor’s appointment and now the bus ministry has just bloomed, do you get how this works! Don’t get distracted write it down and bring it up in the Vision Section)
  3. Inventory personnel; paid or volunteer you have that run the ministry. For example the Ministry (probably a non-profit that has been called a church) that has a building, sound equipment and possibly a mortgage payment and utility bills (could be more than one ministry or a ministry of ministries) does need a board of directors to be financially responsible to handle the resources given. Remember the board of whatever you call them are there to handle carnal physical decision with integrity. Even though some on this board may be true Elders of the Church, at this time they have nothing to do with The True Church; they are a board of directors for the ministry.

List them; board members, cleaning crew, secretary, Web Design guy, landscaper, bookkeeper, music team, ushers, repairs & snow removal, who buys the toilet paper. (*Note if at this point you discover that the main leader of this ministry and or spouse is doing most of these jobs, you may want to ask if you keep the building or if you keep this or these ministries going. Perhaps you may want to consider selling the building and renting the local hotel conference room once a week. Don’t get distracted bring this back up in the Evaluation Section.)

  1. Inventory Legal issues, Debt & Assets. Is the ministry a corporation (it will probably need to make a legal name change, again don’t get bogged down here, bring it up in the Evaluation Section). List all: ministry debt, credit, monthly bills; salaries, insurance, electric, water, sewer, trash & supplies, law suits. Whether you have the budget or not write it down this is still inventory of legal issues. Now list all financial assets: lands, buildings, grants, average monthly giving, businesses.
  2. Inventory membership. Do you have a membership list with updated addresses? This list is vital because it represents not only members of The True Church that are in your influence but also a list of supporters of your ministry. This list will eventually turn into two different lists. Don’t evaluate yet, save your evaluation until after the Vision section.

SESSION #2 START THE VISION

  1. Quick Review: here is where it gets enjoyable as you allow the creativity of the Holy Spirit to free-flow through us collective! Here is what you have to work with; write it on the board!

Your City, County, State, Nation

Your calling, your ministry and your ministries

Your debts (vision plan on becoming debt free)

Your assets: this is actually your “War Chest” an inventory of everything you have to go to war with. People, lands & buildings, money, commitments, influence, longevity, trust

Your history: how many have been truly born again, baptized in water, filled with the Spirit & discipled in the last month, year, 5 years.

  1. Vision: Here is a sample (remember our Lord will guide you specifically in your area and situation!) *Suggestion: start from the smallest most important element and work out from there, the good news is that you are already a success in the Kingdom of God knowing that you will hear: “Well done…” now let’s just put Satan under our foot (bind the strongman) and steal all of his goods in our town!

VISION FOR THE TRUE CHURCH

May I share a personal word of our Lord Jesus to me in 2014 for The True Church?

Everyone Win One

Click the pic above for the Video!

“Everyone Win One!”

Now it is a Word to you.

Start the “brainstorm” session with this question: What would it take to have everyone in your influence win one more person to Christ in the next 4-6 weeks? Get a second white board or start with a clean sheet of paper. Pretend you have nothing; you are one born again person with your Bible. If your vision can be done with you alone, it can be reproduced in others.

This goal will launch your vision: Everyone in our fellowship win one lost person to our Lord Jesus in the next 4-6 weeks and then disciple them. I did not say, bring a sinner to our building and let the pastor lead them to the lord (although that will happen). Each individual person lead another to Christ on their own. Here is where we train the people to do the work! Everyone wins!

What would be needed?

  1. Prayer that each would be filled with the Holy Spirit to be a witness.
  2. A simple evangelism training class, if you don’t have one click on my WebSite
  3. A simple discipleship path
  4. What a Home Meeting looks like. (all can be found on my Web Site)

SESSION #3 VISION FOR THE MINISTRY

Now the vision for the ministry can start to take on a clear focus; as the ministry is always in place to support The True Church to BE The True Church. At this point you may decide to sell everything you have purchased in the name of the church because it is just a big boat anchor that is robbing The True Church of its: time, money, energy and influence. If the ministry was originally and primarily a Teaching Gift or Pastoral Gift just think of the freedom of a “No Overhead Ministry”. You have 10, 20 or 30 some homes open every week with 5 to 10 people gathering being The True Church. You and your leadership team “float” from meeting to meeting; encouraging the people, being a part of their intimate lives, keeping your finger on the pulse of the move of God in your town and neighbourhoods. Finances that are pledged or given can go straight to salaries, helps and community events.

You rent a conference room or office building somewhere in town, or choose the largest living room in your fellowship or keep your building. A place where you can hold training meetings, new believers classes, seminars etc.

EVALUATION: Does the word church appear in your Legal Name? You will want to change your name. Even though the worldly governmental system does not care, you will want to clearly describe to The True Church, what the ministry actually is. Examples Christian Faith Center of city name, Neighbourhood Ministries, Neighbourhood Resources, Town name Outreach Center, Restoration Station of Town Name etc.

Because Satan has so influenced our culture and The True Church has drifted so far from the bulls-eye, even drifted off the target altogether the hardest obstacle , yet most powerful declaration is to change your vocabulary & definitions. Old Religious question: “Where do you go to Church?” New Reply: “The Church meets on Sundays for celebration in the Ministry Building at 10 AM.” If your building continues to have the name CHURCH on the sign and your stationary this transition will fail from the start.

Now take all of your inventory items and address each one; do they stay do they go, is the ministry over or do you continue?

NOTE OF ENCOURAGEMENT

You will come to a foundational identity of who you are and who your group is IN CHRIST but this is organic and will constantly be changing, becoming, moving and growing! “I pray in Jesus Name that you all will experience and walk in great freedom through this process and that your relationships will become stronger than ever before! Amen.”

Chapter 8

THE  RAPTURE

After careful study of the previous chapters of this book, we must have anticipated the truth of the rapture, which we hope to make clear in this chapter.  If we study the chart which is folded in this book, we will see that the first resurrection commences at the rapture, and continues until the Glorious Appearing of Christ.  This is the resurrection of which John speaks in Rev. 20:4-6, as follows:

“And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.

“But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished.  This is the first resurrection.

“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”

I. NOT GENERAL RESURRECTION

The idea that all the dead are brought forth at the same time, and that there will be a general judgment, to which all, both good and bad, will be called, and judged at the same time, is an error that grows out of not rightly dividing the word of truth.     So, it is scripturally certain that all the wicked and those who have received the mark of the beast will be resurrected after the thousand years re finished. In other words, the holy ones will live and reign with Christ a thousand years before the wicked ones will be resurrected. This, of itself, is sufficient to cause us to reject the idea of one general resurrection.

One of the evident things in God’s word is that there is a first resurrection, and that this resurrection will precede the millennium. The scripture says, in Rev. 20:5, “But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.”

1. First Resurrection Not New Birth

It is quite common to hear, from those who seem to be careless in the reading of God’s word, that the first resurrection is the new birth.  This is not authenticated by the scriptures.  Resurrection, as referred to in the quotation given above, Rev. 20:5, is not figurative, but is a word literally applied to the dead body.

The new birth has reference to the regeneration of the spirit, which makes us new creatures in Christ.  We re distinctly told in Eccl. 12:7, “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: but the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.”  This explains the verse given in I Thess. 4:14, “For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.”  The spirits of those who have died in the triumphs of a living faith in Jesus go at once to God, only their bodies go into the grave.  But at the first resurrection, all the bodies of those righteous dead will hear the call and come forth to meet Jesus, their spirits will take possession of their resurrected and glorified bodies, and they will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air.

Paul says, in I Cor. 15:23, “But every man in his own order.”  Order here means regiment, or rank.  This is an important fact, and helps us to decipher the manner of the resurrection.  Some will be in rank A, and some in Rank B.  The dead and the living will take the rank peculiar to the state they possessed while they were alive.  The fact that multitudes will have died before that day will make no difference in their rank.  Those who remain until the moment of that call to come forth will be changed, and they will join those whose rank corresponds with theirs.  This makes it plain that the church of the Gentiles will be made up of orders, according to the measure of the Holy Ghost’s work in their lives.

The firs resurrection is not the new birth, because we are told, in Rev. 20:6, “Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection.”  This is evidence that the new birth must be first experienced before we can ever have part in the first resurrection.  That experience of blessedness and holiness, which the new birth gives is not the first resurrection, but a pre-requisite for it.

Again, order is one of the first principles of God, the Creator; and it is reasonable to believe that order will be the character of the summons to the judgment.  That order is plainly set forth: first the just, then the unjust.  It will be first the righteous, then the wicked; for in no case are the wicked represented as coming to be judged with the righteous.  God does not mix things.  Sometimes man gets things mixed, but it is because he does not carefully read the scriptures.

We have seen how the previous chapters of this book have set for the order of the reckoning time.  That order is that the Gentiles shall be first and Israel last.  If you will refer again to the chart, you will see that the great regiment of the first resurrection is divided into the following orders:

  1. The rapture of the Gentile full overcomers.
  2. The tribulation saints, or the fullness of the Gentiles.
  3. The rapture of believing and full overcoming Israel.
  4. The glorious appearing of Jesus Christ, or His coming back to earth again.

Our purpose is to take the first two orders, or the church of the Gentiles, and scripturally define their position.

2. The Scriptural Fact of the Rapture

We will notice that there are two orders in the church of the Gentiles: their rapture, as seen in the fourth chapter of Revelation, and their fullness, as seen in Rev. 7:9.

The scriptural fact of the rapture is suggested by the fourth chapter of Revelation.  John is caught up by the Spirit into heaven.  In order that he might have the real experience, John is not only caught up, but he is thrust forward into the very time and place of the rapture.

Those whom John first saw, when the door was opened, were crowned ones, and were not the multitude he saw in the seventh chapter, for that order had no crowns: but they were seen as a Blood-washed multitude with palms in their hands.  That fact puts this multitude in another rank, different from that occupied by the raptured ones whom he saw.

The four Living creatures, who were in the raptured body, seemed to be so closely identified with the great throne, upon which God sat, that when they spoke their voice seemed to come from the midst of that throne, and to be the voice of the throne.  These four Living creatures seem to be the heavenly choristers: they lead the thanksgiving service, they lead the worship, they direct the anthem of praise.  Then in one spirit of adoration and homage, that happy raptured multitude, represented by the four Living creatures and the twenty-four Elders, fall before the throne; they cast their crowns at the feet of Him who sat upon it, saying (Rev. 4:11), “Thou are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for Thou hast created all things, and for Thy pleasure they are and were created.”  Again we see this same multitude singing the new song (Rev. 5:8-14):

“And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of the saints.

“And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by Thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; and hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.

“And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands;

“Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing.

“And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all  that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne . . .  .

“And the four beasts said, Amen.  And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped Him that liveth for ever and ever.”

It was the gospel of the Son of God; the song of redemption, sung by those raptured ones, from the midst of the throne.  This will be the raptured company; that glorified, selected body which Jesus will call up to meet Him in the air.  These raptured ones are a prophetic picture of the first fruits of the early harvest, the promise of the coming full harvest.  This full harvest will be the completion and fullness of the Gentile church.  Paul speaks of this in Rom. 11:25:  “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in.”

These four Living creatures and twenty-four elders are a prefigured representative body.  They are not only dictating the anthems of praise, but they are voicing the very essence of the inner hearts of all who are in that company.  Hear the responsive chant, or ratification, by the innumerable host which compose that company, and then the echoes that come from all the living.  Rotherhams translation of verse 10 says, “And didst make them unto our God a kingdom and priests.”  The King James version says, “And didst make us, “ etc.  Whether it be “them” or “us”, they are evidently, identifying themselves with this raptured company, and representing, in voice and heart, all who are around the throne at this prophetic moment.  They are there with the hosts of others, who, with one mighty voice, accept and sing that new song.  And when the music of that angelic host subsides, we hear the ratification in Rev. 5:14: “And the four beasts said, Amen.  And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped Him that liveth for ever and ever.”

It seems to one who studies this question, that there must be a reason for the rapture.   You will remember that Jesus said, in the parable of the laborers, “Many are called, but few chosen.”   Where there is a choice to be made (and Jesus says there is a choice), there is a difference; and where there is a difference, there are merits possessed by some which others do not possess.  Jesus says that in the reckoning time there will be many called, but few chosen.  It is evident that the ones chosen are those who have qualified, especially, for this rapture.

There is no one who can say, as he looks over those who believe in Jesus and belong to His body, that all are equally qualified.  Some, while they believe in Jesus as their Savior, do not welcome the operation of the Spirit in their lives.  We can not say they are not Christians, but we can say they are not Spirit filled.  They have been born again by the Spirit, but they have not received the Holy Spirit since they believed.  “Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?”  Acts 19:2.  Not only are they not advancing but they are resisting the power that would set them on fire for God, and make them efficient in their testimony.  They do not stand with the class of Spirit filled workers whose whole being is alive to God.  Even the casual observer would not class them together.  Then why should we expect them to be in the same rank at the reckoning time?  Jesus taught this difference in the parable of the pearl of great price:  in the parable of the pounds: in the parable of the laborers: and in the doctrine of rewards, where very man shall receive according to his deeds.

This being so taught, may we not say the same is true of the church which Jesus is calling from among the Gentiles?  He will not only call the church, but from that church which He has called, washed, cleansed and sanctified, He will CHOOSE a people for His special glory.  That choice will be on the ground of special equipment and efficiency.   God has provided that equipment, and he who carelessly refuses to perfect himself will certainly not deserve a place in the rapture.

This suggests our next thought:

3. The Time of the Rapture

The time of the rapture will be the time of Christ’s second coming, which will be in two stages.  In the first stage, He will come for the Gentile church.  In the second stage, He will come to Israel as their Messiah.

Not Expected

He will come for the Gentile church at a time when the world is not thinking of looking for Him.  His coming will be before the tribulation has commenced.  If you will notice the chart, you will see that the first stage of His second coming will be immediately after the utterance of the message to the Laodicean church, which is the last message.  The effect of that last message will be felt until every Gentile who will believe has been reached.  That message will be carried through the first six seals of the tribulation period.  Therefore, those who are not ready to meet Jesus when He comes at the rapture will pass into the first six stages of the tribulation.  John says of these (Rev. 7:14), These are they who come out of the great tribulation.” – Rotherham.

But those who are qualified and worthy will be caught up to meet Jesus in the air, when He comes for them at the rapture.  I Thess. 4:15-18

“For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

“For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the arch-angel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

“Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

Very Near

The time of that coming, we believe, is very near, but the time will not be announced.  Even the angels in heaven do not know, as that time is known by God the Father only.  This is the element of hope in the gospel, for Paul says, in I Thess. 4:18 “Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”  If the whole church were to pass through the tribulation, as some believe this verse would have no meaning.  The hope which Paul holds out to the church is the fact that those who are qualified, at the coming of Christ, shall be (not may be), caught up to meet Jesus in the air.  Thus they escape the fearful tribulation which is to come upon the earth, the commencement of which will be at the entrance of the white Horse Rider, Rev. 6:2.

  1. Be Ye Ready

Now, since the exact time of the rapture can not be known, although we know from the fulfillment of prophecies that the tie is near, let every saint of God be ready; for there will be no trumpet to announce this coming.  It will be preceded by a calm, like that which settles down before the breaking of a terrible storm.  I Thess. 5:3 says, “When they shall say peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them.”

It is possible for us to be so absorbed in the cares of life, that we will not notice the deception of the times.  It is even possible for us who are deeply absorbed in the study of this long looked for event to be overtaken and miss God’s best for us, the rapture.  “Therefore e ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh,”  Matt. 24:44.  Pray that ye may be accounted worthy to escape, Luke 21:36.

  1. The Manner of Christ’s Coming

We are told that He will come as a thief, and this statement reveals two things: first, it defines how Jesus will steal away His bride; second, it reveals, more clearly than ever, the fact that this stage of His coming will be for a different purpose than the second stage.  The second stage will be a revelation to the whole world; for “every eye shall see Him, and they also which pierced Him.” Rev 1:7.

This is additional proof that His coming for His precious ones, at the rapture, will be as a thief comes, and will not be seen by the world of unbelievers.  We see, in Heb. 9:28, that “unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”  So those who look ardently for Him (as Rotherham translates it), and have made themselves worthy, will be the only ones who will see Him at that time.  “There shall be two men in one bed; and one shall be taken, and the other shall be left.  Two women shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left.  Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken and the other left,” Luke 17: 34-36.  Doubtless, in each case both were Christians, but both were not Spirit filled and no overcomers.

As a Thief

But, how does a thief come, and for what purpose?  He comes silently.  No trumpet announces his approach; he carries no flaming torch.  He comes to steal, and enters stealthily.  Then, he does not take everything of value.  He leaves the furniture, which is not what he wants.  He looks for the diamonds, the rubies, the silver and the gold – the things that are most precious.

Secretly

Jesus will so come, not with a flaming sword to execute vengeance.  No one will see Him at this time, except those who are ardently looking for Him.  He is coming for just one thing, which is not to reveal His glory, for the time of that revelation is at the second stage of His coming.  That one thing will be to catch out His precious Bride.  Ah!! You say His Bride?  Yes!!  Among the raptured ones the Bride of Christ will be hidden away.  The church is the body for which He gave Himself.  Paul says in Eph. 5: 25-27, “Even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.  That He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any suck thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”  This is the pearl for which the merchantman made the supreme sacrifice.

There is something very beautiful in this manner of Christ’s coming at the rapture.  The Bride will be ardently and earnestly looking and longing for her Bridegroom, as the Bridegroom is longing for her.  That meeting in the air will be a blessed, glorious, and mutual greeting.  It will be the fruition of the hope so long entertained.  It will be the escape of the precious and beloved Bride from the awful throes of the great tribulation, which must come before the earth is restored to its Edenic purity.  “Because thou hast kept the word of My patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come pon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.  Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take they crown,” Rev. 3:10,11.

Jesus will be the resurrection life of which He spoke when He said, “He that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die.”

The unbeliever will not recognize this coming of Christ.  To him, this catching away of the prepared and Spirit-filled ones will be a strange coincidence, which he will explain in a materialistic way.  The believer who is converted, but has not yielded his life to God, will be stricken with a spirit of remorse, because he has not given credence to the doctrine of Christ’s second coming.  He will remember all the sermons, testimonies, and messages he has heard, and will say, “Yes it is all true, and I have missed it.  I have missed God’s best, and the joy it would give me now.”

It is pleasant to believe that between the rapture and the gathering in of the last straggling Gentile, at the end of the church period, there will be a mighty turning unto the Lord.  Millions of church members who are not living a victorious life, will then turn to God and yield themselves to Him.  Many ministers of God who have, amidst much reproach, given out the word of the kingdom, and warned the people against the encroachments of this deceptive age, will rejoice to see the fruits of their labor.  The word shall not return voice, it shall accomplish.  They have strewn the word in hard places, and under much discouragement; but they shall come forth rejoicing, bearing precious sheaves.

This rapture is our high calling in Christ.  We may now take possession of it.  If you are not ready, you must get ready quickly.  This is no fancy or dream; Jesus is really coming soon.  Do not miss God’s best.  Let not another day pass before you get right with God, “for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh.”

  1. This Rapture Exclusively Gentile

It has been shown that God does make a separation between Israel and the Gentile.  You will see on the chart that the barley harvest includes only the Gentiles.  The house of Israel will be reckoned with as the wheat harvest.  The house of Israel will be reckoned with as the wheat harvest.  But both harvests had the sheaf of first fruits.  This sheaf of first fruits, in each case, was gathered before the full harvest, which they represented, was gathered.  Great care was taken to keep the barley sheaf separate from the wheat sheaf.  This, unquestionably, is a type of the Gentile harvest ad of the Jewish harvest.

This subject will be treated more fully in the next chapter on the Bride of Christ.

Chapter 9

THE BRIDE OF CHRIST

Much has been said about the Bride of Christ.  It is evident that she exists somewhere, and is acting in some capacity.  The place nearest to the Bridegroom is the place which is held by the Bride.  The Bride is composed of the full overcomers, who are very close in their fellowship with Christ and with each other.  They are also in very near relationship to the Holy Ghost, who transmits to them the precious things of the Bridegroom.

The world has always listened to the message of love; but to the Bride of Christ that message is peculiarly sweet and precious.  Christ, the Bridegroom, speaks to no other as He speaks to His beloved bride.  His yearning is beautifully expressed in the Songs of Solomon 5:2, “I sleep, but My heart waketh; it is the voice of My beloved that knocketh, saying, Open unto me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefileds: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.”

I. THE BRIDE CHOSEN BEFORE ISRAEL WILL BE RECALLED

To the careful student it is plain that the Bride of Christ is not composed of Old Testament saints. In Matt. 11:11, it is recorded that Jesus said, “Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist.” Yet we find John saying (John 3:29, 30), “He that hath the Bride is the Bridegroom: but the friend of the Bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the Bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease.” The Bride of Christ, therefore, was not among the great men of Israel, among whom John was the greatest.

“Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His name.     After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

First: God is taking a people “for His name.” What is the meaning of taking a people for His name? It means that people will be the bride of Jesus, who is the Bridegroom.

Second:  That Bride, or people who take the name of Jesus, will be taken from among the Gentiles, not from among the Israelites, whom he represented, were friends of the Bridegroom; agrees with this.  A friend is not the Bride, but may be very closely associated with both the Bride and the Bridegroom.

Third:  This taking out of the Bride of Christ will be accomplished between the time of John’s statement and the rebuilding of the tabernacle, or the regathering of the Israelites.  Since the gathering of the Gentiles, from whom the Bride of Christ is to come, is not the same as the regathering of Israel, it follows that the Bride of Christ, therefore, can not be of Israel.

Again, Israel is already married, is a wife and not a bride, as is shown by Jer. 3:14, 20: “Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion.”  “Surely as a wife treacherously departeth from her husband, so have ye dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, said the Lord.”  Israel has been unfaithful, but she will surely be restored to her Husband, God the Father.  Note Isa. 54:5-7:

“For thy Maker is thine husband; the Lord of hosts is His name; and they Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall He be called.

“For the Lord hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God.

“For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.”

  1. BRIDE OF CHRIST FROM GENTILES

The above references are conclusive proof that Jesus is calling His Bride from among the Gentiles, not Israel.  No reasoning that will mix those who are the Bride of Christ with Israel, who is already the Wife of the Father, can be scriptural.  John the Baptist represented the prophets, and was the greatest of them all, but he was only the friend of the Bridegroom.  Those who are overcomers among the Gentiles will be made one with our wonderful Christ, and be with Him as the heavenly Bride.

It is very precious to know that in that great gathering of the heavenly marriage company there will be such friends as Abraham, Moses, Samuel, David, and all those mighty men, who stood so true to God the Father.  It is wonderful to know that the Father has sent the Holy Ghost to bear the words of love from the Son to us, who are Gentiles and so weak and poor in ourselves.  He tells us that the Son loves us in a peculiar sense.

The Son gave Himself for the church, and from it He will choose His Bride.  Eph. 5:25-27 says:

“Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it;

“That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word.

“That He might present it unto Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”

1. The Marks of the Bride

The Bride is a called-out body, from a called-out body.  Jesus said, “Many be called, but few chosen.”  That is, many will be in the church, called out of the world; but a few, taken out of the church in a special manner, are the chosen ones.  This chosen company will be composed of those who are prepared for the rapture.  The Bride will be among those who go up in the rapture.  It is not reasonable to say that all who are converted will be classed in the same rank.  It is clearly set forth that the Bride will be chosen by virtue of the cleanness and sanctity of her whole life and being.

There are three kinds of fullness.  We see the thirty fold, the sixtyfold, and the hundredfold believers.  These three ranks of fullness all grew on the same good ground.  That which fell on other ground did not mature, and brought forth nothing.

2. The Bride Has Marks of Fullness

The difference in the fullness must have been caused by the amount of labor bestowed upon the growing crop. The three kinds of fullness speak of three degrees of merit. This is conclusive evidence that there are three different orders, or ranks, in the church. You will find this is given on the chart, which shows three orders: the Bride, the Overcomers who are not the Bride, and the Tribulation Saints. So we have a people who are called out of the world, who constitute the believing church; a body called out from the church, who form the raptured body of overcomers; then we still have a chosen body called from among the overcomers. These will be the Bride of Christ.

3. The Bride the Few Chosen

This viewing of the Bride of Christ as a called-out body is in perfect harmony with God’s way and method of doing things. He never calls out the large body. His method has always been to choose a few from the many called.

He called Abraham out because he possessed the necessary element of faith, and He made him a great nation.

He chose out of the first-born of Israel, saying, “They shall be Mine.” Then He chose the tribe of Levi from among the twelve tribes of Israel, and said that they should be for an offering unto the Lord. This act of God is peculiarly significant, as is seen in Num. 8:13-16. This shows how God chose a tribe from among the tribes, a special choice from a choice.

He called Israel out from all the nations of the earth, because they, as a nation, represented those who believed in the true God.

He called out Noah and his family into the ark, because He had found Noah righteous; it was merit that gave Noah his place in the ark.

III   THE BRIDE A PECULIAR BODY FOR A PECULIAR PURPOSE

In Eph. 5:25-27, we read, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Chris also loved the church, and gave Himself for it; that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”  We see here two attitudes of the believer.

1. Standing

First, his standing is perfect in Christ Jesus, since the sacrifice was made for every believer, for the whole church.  Christ’s purpose was also that all should be holy without spot of wrinkle.

2. State

Second, his state is the degree of perfection at which he arrives as he follows on after the Lord.  All will not submit to the process of perfecting.  All will not deny themselves, and submit wholly to the Lord; be crucified unto the world, and have the world crucified unto them.  Their state will be the ground of the judgment of the believer.  “Many are called, but few chosen,”  Matt. 20:16.  Therefore, the Bride will be the few who are chosen out of the church.

IV. THE BRIDE PECULIARLY SEPARATED

Let us notice further. Gen. 2:23 says, “And Adam said, this is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man.”  There is a deep significance in that type of Eve, as seen in this scripture.  Notice that she was taken from the body of the firt Adam, who said, “She shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of man.”  Eve was not the body of Adam.  She was of his bone and of his flesh, but she had a distinct individuality.  She became, distinctly, a separate body.  She was made peculiarly separate, that she might be the bride of Adam.  His body could not be his bride.

Paul speaks of this, in Eph. 5:32, as a great mystery, and says it is the church.  The truth is, there is an earthly body of Christ.  Paul said, “Now are ye the body of Christ.”  This is the church militant.  As out of Adam’s side came his bride, so out of the militant church will be taken the Bride of Christ.  This is another unanswerable proof that the Bride will not be the whole body of Christ, but will be separated from that great body of believers, which we call the church.

Notice again:  The separation of Adam’s bride took place while he was in a deep sleep; and so it will be when the Bride of Christ is taken out of the body, at the rapture.  At that time, the church will be in the midst of sensual counter attractions which will blind her eyes, stop her ears, and make her insensible to the separation of the Spirit-filled body, the Bride, who will be secretly stolen away by her Lover-Christ.  But when she opens her eyes she will be conscious of the fact that those who were her strength and power are gone.  If you will read the last message, given to the Laodicean church, you will see these very conditions portrayed.  Rev. 3:5-18:

“I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor not:  I would that thou wert cold or hot.

“So, then because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot, I will spew thee out of My mouth.

“Because thou sayest, I am rich and increased with goods, and have need of nothing: and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor and blind, and naked:

“I counsel thee to buy of Me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.”

V. THE BRIDE IN THE SHEAF OF FIRST FRUITS

There are some who maintain that there will be no rank, or order, as reward of merit, when we have come to our fullness as a church. But types and prophecy teach us differently. Notice how the sheaf of the first fruits was gathered. The master of the field took his sickle and searched the whole field. He gathered one head here and another there, taking only the early ripened, well filled, perfect heads. When he had gathered this sheaf he took it to the priest, who offered it as the sheaf of the first fruits, which was a promise of the full harvest to follow. This master of the field is a type of Christ, who will come as a thief, to take only the most precious ones out of the church. The sheaf of first fruits is a type of those who will be taken out of the Gentile church at the time of the rapture. They will be selected, caught up, and offered as a promise of the great harvest to follow, which will be the fullness of the Gentiles.

Can the fact that the raptured ones will be a choice out of a choice be more clearly set forth? They are separated as the choicest, early ripe heads, and caught up in advance of the great harvest from the same field. This is a wonderful type, and proves again the doctrine of the rapture. There can be no questioning of the fact that the first fruits of the Gentile church will be caught out, by Him who is Master of the field, before the great harvest is gathered.

VI. THE BRIDE SEPARATED AND CLEANSED

Could you place with that company we call the Bride the man who, though born again, has never separated himself from the world by special service?  He is still loving the theatres, the cards, and the dance, and does not expect or want the Bridegroom to come.  We have many believers of that type, whose habits class them with the smoking, chewing, drinking crowd.  The very thought of placing them with the overcomers is distasteful to anyone.  It is not possible that they could share equally with those who have separated themselves by self-denial and cross-bearing, and have chosen, for Christ’s sake, to suffer reproach outside the camp.  The Bride of Christ is a chosen, early ripe, well filled body and, like the sheaf of first fruits, she will be taken out before the sickle gathers the great harvest, thus escaping the tribulation.  Luke 21:26 says, “Watch ye, therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Paul’s prophetic view saw this separated sheaf of first fruits of the early harvest when he gave us the following in I Thess. 4:16, 17:

“For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

“Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

He left us His benediction of comfort in the eighteenth verse:  “Wherefore comfort one another with these words.”

VII. RQUISITES OF THE BRIDE

Sanctification is one of the requisites of the Bride of Christ.  Paul says concerning the Bride, “Christ gave Himself for her that He might sanctify her.”  Sanctification here means the same as it means elsewhere, separation unto a holy purpose.  The purpose of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross was that we might be thus separated, and it is the privilege of every one who is called.  But we know that all who are called are not thus separated; consequently, they are not chosen.  So, while Christ’s purpose ws to provide a means by which He might present to Himself a Bride separated from the world, there will be but few who will be willing to deny themselves.

1. Sanctified

“Sanctified, and cleansed by the word” means that as the word of God operates on us, it reveals our state.  Thus, sanctification and cleansing are a progressive process.  As the word of God is made known to us, it makes new claims for chastity and holiness.  As its depths are unfathomable, its claims are not fully known, and we are always in the progressive stage of sanctification.  So the Bride of Christ is making herself ready.  She is now the pearl of great price, before He hs polished her and made her all glorious, “that He might present to Himself a church without spot or wrinkle.”  She will be perfected at the resurrection.  He will catch her up to Himself, and she shall see Him as He is.  Then she shall be like Him.

  1. Much Prayer

The much prayer is another requisite which the Bride much possess.  When Christ gave the exhortation to pray always, He did it because there is no other way of becoming ready for the rapture.  Nothing will take the place of prayer. Faith will not, of itself, make us broken in spirit.  Neither will faith, alone keep us yielded to God.  But prayer changes things.  It changes us from formal to contrite suppliants.  It changes a hard, unfeeling heart to one of brokenness and meekness.  No one can make any advancement in the spiritual life, unless he has the prayer life.  Prayer illuminates the avenues of our hearts, so we can understand God’s word.  Much prayer will characterize the life of the Bride, and help to qualify her for God’s very best.

  1. Patience or Endurance

Endurance is one of the requisites John speaks of in Rev. 3:10.  “Because thou didst keep My word of endurance, I will also keep thee out of the hour of trial which is about to come upon the whole habitable world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.” – Rotherham.  This is very plain.  We need no lexicographer to help us understand that.  If we measure up to the sanctity and holiness of the bride we shall be kept out of the tribulation by being transported to the skies before it breaks out.

  1. Peculiar Belief

Now Jesus tells us that a peculiar believe in Him is necessary.  In John 11:25, 26, He says, “He that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he life: and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die.”  We can readily see that it is the resurrection power in our bodies that is meat here.  That is the power which will raise the dead bodies at the rapture, and at the same moment catch up the ready ones who will be living at that time.  And together they will meet Jesus in the air.

  1. A Great Love

It is but natural to think that those who will be the Bride of Christ must have a great love for Him-their Bridegroom.  This brings us face to face with a practical fact.  There will be many, at the time of the rapture, who are not loving Christ supremely, who nevertheless must be called believers, and members of His church  But we know Jesus expects an unwavering love.  If we really love Him we will be ardently looking for Him.  A bride who mixes up with other affections ad is unfaithful to her lover, will not be worthy of him.  If she loves him she longingly looks for his coming.  She keeps herself ready to receive him, and to be received by him.  So it is with the Bride of Christ.  She will keep herself ready for His appearing at any moment.

  1. Expectancy

The she must be expectant.  We are told that “unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time.”  This expectancy of Christ’s appearing begets readiness.  Jesus said that one is a faithful and wise servant who does not say in his heart, “My Lord delayeth His coming.”  We confidently believe that if we are ready to be caught up as the Bride of Christ, we will be ready for anything He has for us.

An expectant faith is the only faith that amounts to anything.  “He that would come unto Christ must believe that He is, and that He is the rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.”

  1. Soul Winner

Surely the Bride of Christ must be an efficient soul winner.  She must have that element in her which will bring forth spiritual children.  It is inconceivable that the one who is barren and unfruitful in spirituality can ever be the Bride of Christ.  Jesus has provided the means by which we may all become proficient workers for the salvation of souls, and He surely expects His bride to be thus equipped.  There are believers in Jesus who have never made an effort to win souls for Him; and for this very reason they are barren, and can not be in the rapture.

  1. The Holy Spirit

There is still another requisite which I will mention, and that is a spirit of hunger and earnest searching for God’s choicest and best gift.  The absence of this hunger will tend toward barrenness and emptiness; but, “He that hungereth and thirsteth . . . . shall be filled.”  In these days no one can expect to be in the rapture who will not heed the Holy Spirit’s entreaty to come into a life of fullness, by tarrying for the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

Jesus has provided for this efficiency.  We remember that He said, in the fourteenth chapter of John, “Greater works than these shall he do; because I got unto My Father . . .. I will pray the Father and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever.”  Notice the marvelous works of the apostles; thousands of souls were saved in a single day, which was great work.  Jesus labored three years and one hundred twenty souls were the product of His labors; but when this equipment of the Holy Ghost came, the church grew marvelously.

It seems to those who are deeply concerned, that we all need to get back to first principles.  Those who aspire to be members of the Bride, will not dare to resist the Holy Spirit.  All should be conscious of the need of much prayer and endurance, lest they come short of God’s best, and find themselves without the essential requisites which will enable them to be in that raptured company.
