These seven keys are taken from the full teaching of “Through The Bible.”

Every treasure hunter needs to have not the best tools, rather the basic tools. In the case of understanding the mysteries in the Bible a computer would be great but not necessary. The basic tools are the Bible itself, a relationship with Jesus of whom the Bible is written and understanding that the Holy Spirit WANTS YOU TO UNDERSTAND the Bible. Therefore, let us pull up a chair at The Captain’s table as He unfolds the mysteries!

GENERAL KEYS TO UNLOCK THE BIBLE AS A WHOLE

1. The Word of God as recorded in The Bible is the only True Living Standard in the World.

Your word is a lamp to my feet  and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105

This is the standard by which we measure everything from getting married to eternal life. Every aspect of life has its foundation in the Bible; it is absolute truth. A standard is a foundation of measurement, like high jump standards in track and field, a tape measure in inches or metric or deciding on the standard language we are using today is Greek.  If two different people use the same standard they can not only communicate but also excel in whatever they put their hand to.

2. The Word of God is ALIVE! It collides, interacts and invades our lives.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Since this standard is “alive” allow it to mess with your life as you read it. If people try to shut you down by saying they don’t believe in the Bible therefore you have nothing to talk about, don’t try to defend the Bible – just use it! Jesus did not try to defend the Word of God when Satan tempted Him, He combated with these words” “It is written.” The Word of God will win the battle. Your word I have hidden in my heartPsalm 119:11

3. The Bible is a library of 66 separate books (now compiled in one volume) written by more than forty authors over a period of 1500 years. Each one of these authors confessing they were only co-authors, as they were inspired by God to write. The amazing thing is that none of the 66 books contradict the others, on the contrary; they actually cross reference each other thousands of times! When treasure hunting in the Old Testament you will find statements that are said they will happen or be fulfilled in the future. This is called prophesy. In the New Testament you will find statements saying things like; this fulfills the prophesy of so-in-so recorded in the Old Testament. There are over a thousand of these of which around five hundred have already been fulfilled!

4. The Bible is Eye-witnessed & Co-authored; Divinely Ordered – Humanly Written.

For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. 1 Peter 1:16-18

An eyewitness is as close to the original as possible. Take the four Gospels for example; this is like handing four people individual cameras and having them all shoot a particular scene from four different directions. You would have four eyewitnesses of the same event. Would they all be identical? No, of course not but each one having different facts about the same event!

5. Jesus is the Living Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:1-4

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ ”16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. John 1:14-18

Did you ever wonder why Bibles highlight Jesus’ words in red? Because Jesus is God, He is the Living Word. Everything Jesus said IS the Word of God. He actually “refines” ancient scripture on the spot. 21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. Matthew 5:21-22

6. The Word of God is revealed in the People of the Bible and how God deals with them.

It would be good to start by knowing these folks in the “Hall of Faith.” Able, Cain, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Israel, Moses, Joshua, the harlot Rahab, Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, all the prophets recorded in Hebrews 11.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. Hebrews 11:1

Every person recorded in the Bible is there for you to relate to personally. These are our examples on how to approach God; follow Merry not her sister Martha John 11:20.  How to receive healing for an employee or member of your household; follow the Gentile Centurion Matthew 8:8.

7. The who, what, where, when and why keys

If we can understand how the scripture you are reading fits into the Whole of the Bible then EVERY WORD becomes a treasure hunter’s clue to Truth! This is call context. Always ask:

Who wrote this passage? Who was he writing to; Gentiles or Jews, leaders or servants?

What was the foundational reason this passage was written; to correct a teaching, to rebuke folks in sin, or to explain a future event?

Where was this written from and where was it going to geographically? Moses was on Mt Sinai, David was in Jerusalem, Paul was in jail in Rome, and John was on a prison island.

When was this written;Old Testament, New Testament, in Genesis the book of beginnings or Revelation the fulfillment of all things? Put it on the Timeline.

Why was he writing this passage, can we find the underlying motive? The prophet Samuel would have written to record and remind Israel what God had spoken directly to him. Chronicles 1 and 2 were to preserve the words of the ruling kings. Psalms were to record the amazing intimacy mainly between King David and God in his daily affairs. Matthew wrote to explain to the Jews that their Messiah had come through the blood line of Adam and Eve, King David and Mary and Joseph! Mark wrote to the Gentiles removing most of the Jewish religious language that the Gentiles new nothing about. Paul was all about the new gospel of Jesus crucified, resurrected giving us opportunity to salvation by grace through faith. Apostle John wrote like a pastor to little sheep. If we can “catch” the tone we will discover the deeper meaning.
